Congratulations to Kentucky Equal Justice Center, winner of the 2014 Consumer Reports Excellence in Consumer Advocacy Award
By Consumers Union on Tuesday, February 11th, 2014
Consumers Union was proud to present the 2014 Consumer Reports Excellence in Consumer Advocacy Award to the Kentucky Equal Justice Center. Among their many consumer advocacy efforts, KJEC has done significant work to educate Kentucky consumers about their health coverage options under the Affordable Care Act.
When Kentucky’s Governor was working to decide whether or not the state should expand it’s Medicaid program, the KentuckyEqualJusticeCenter served as a strong proponent for the expansion. Ultimately, Governor Beshear chose to expand the Medicaid program. The Center was also instrumental in making sure that health insurers in Kentucky are subject to new rules requiring them to spend at least 80 cents of every premium dollar on care instead of administrative costs.
To spread the word about the ACA, one KJEC staffer drove 1,000 miles per week for months all over the state, giving informational talks at libraries, bars, churches, and more.
Kentucky has been touted as having one of the most effective health insurance marketplaces in the nation, and has also enrolled a significant number of newly eligible people in its expanded Medicaid program. Governor Steve Beshear estimated that about 15 percent of Kentucky’s population was uninsured before this year, when they could sign up for coverage via the Affordable Care Act. As of January 17, more than 160,000 Kentuckians had signed up for health coverage through Kynect, Kentucky’s health insurance marketplace, and more than 120,000 had signed up for the expanded Medicaid program.
Congratulations to the Kentucky Equal Justice Center!
