We’re getting closer to finally putting an end to annoying – and often harmful – robocalls. Consumers like you have created a real movement to stop robocalls, and legislators are getting the message.

Today, Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) introduced a bill, the Repeated Objectionable Bothering of Consumers on Phones, or “ROBOCOP” Act, that offers a comprehensive solution to the unwanted robocall problem. For too long, phone companies have allowed robocallers to harass consumers. Now, Rep. Speier is ramping up the pressure on phone companies to take action.

The bill requires phone companies to offer consumers free, optional tools to block unwanted phone calls. Emergency robocalls, as well as the robocalls that the consumer consents to receive, will not be impeded. And the consumer can choose to enable or disable the tools at any time. The bill also calls on the telecoms to address the rampant “spoofing” problem – so that you can trust your Caller ID again.

In a press release, Rep. Speier said: “After hearing from many constituents about this issue – and experiencing the annoyance of robocalls myself – I am proud to introduce legislation to block robocalls once and for all.” At the press conference introducing the bill, Rep. Speier added, “it’s time that we do something real for the American consumer.”

Rep. Speier was joined at the press conference by Consumers Union activist Joel Fischman. Consumers Union’s Tim Marvin, who leads the End Robocalls campaign, also spoke on behalf of the bill. Tim said: “Nothing drives phone customers more crazy than robocalls that ring day and night.  Representative Speier’s bill will ensure that the phone companies take action and provide their customers with the tools they need to end robocalls.  We urge Congress to pass this bill and provide their frustrated constituents with the relief they deserve.”

This legislation can make a real difference for consumers, but we’ll need your support behind it. We invite you, your family and friends to join the End Robocalls campaign!
