In 2008, our economy cratered. So Congress put in place a new consumer watchdog agency, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).

Just over the past five years, the CFPB protected homeowners from illegal foreclosures, cracked down on sky-high credit card fees, challenged unfair student loans, and shielded seniors from deceptive marketing. It’s returned nearly $12 billion to 29 million consumers hurt by banks, lenders, debt collectors, and other financial firms — that’s real money, back in the pockets of nearly 1 in 12 Americans.

When a bank or lender harms consumers, the CFPB’s been on the case. Its helped to resolve more than a million complaints from consumers about shady financial practices.

Now, a new bill in Congress backed by the big banks threatens to muzzle this important watchdog and to take away its bark and bite. It would even eliminate the CFPB’s public complaint database, keeping the problems consumers have reported secret.

We believe that key consumer protections for your money are critical to a fair economy — and we’ve got a plan. We’re bringing our voices together to demand that lawmakers protect the CFPB and maintain its safeguards for all consumers.

Join us in calling for a strong CFPB and reasonable standards that protect consumers’ pocketbooks and provide clear rules of the road for banks and lenders.
