Telling the Truth and Standing Up for Consumers’ Right to Know What’s Their Food

Consumers Union, the policy and advocacy arm of Consumer Reports, has long fought for the labeling of food that is genetically engineered. We believe that consumers have a right to know how their food is produced–so that they can make more informed purchasing decisions.
Our own Elisa Odabashian, director of the West Coast office and State Campaigns at Consumers Union, recently wrote an op-ed in the Sacramento Bee demonstrating the importance of California Senate Bill 1381, which would require the labeling of all genetically modified foods in the state. This legislation would be the second in the nation behind Vermont to require GMO labeling without other conditions. Last week, two counties in Oregon banned the growing of GMO crops to reduce risk of contamination of organic crops. All of this legislation has been accomplished through concerned consumers coming together to demand accurate information and the right to know what is in their food.
This op-ed highlights the victory of the Right To Know grassroots movement. Upon reading our op-ed, Dan from Roseville, California, telephoned to congratulate Consumers Union for what he called the “outstanding” editorial in the Sacramento Bee. He noted, “It blew me away, it was so good. You told the truth and we need more of that.” Many citizens feel what Dan feels: we all need more truth and transparency in our food system.
